Milton Avery

[Press Release]
“You must have this confidence or blind faith that something interesting will happen if you keep putting one thing on top of another... the paintings I'm most interested in are enigmatic.”
– Scott Reeder
Scott Reeder is known for employing comedic and parodic strategies that both reference and subvert the histories and conventions of art-making. His work spans painting, sculpture, installation, and film, intertwining language and image, convention and invention, as well as high and low culture. Across bodies of work such as the Image Painting, Pasta Painting, Word Painting, and List Painting series, Reeder develops a practice grounded in repetition, variation, and the productive use of incongruity. His works prompt viewers to reconsider familiar artistic and cultural hierarchies, offering a wry perspective on the absurdities of everyday life through nuanced color and deadpan humor.
Whimsical scenes of bread and butter sunbathing beneath palm trees, or ice cream languishing on tropical beaches, evoke curiosity and quiet unease. These incongruous pairings, rendered in flat compositions and pastel tones, form a stage for playful yet disorienting narratives. Reeder’s work often occupies a space between fine art and popular culture, generating subtle tension and nostalgia. Through humor, he interrogates the history of painting while addressing contradictions inherent in human experience. The Image Painting series, began around 2007, derives its humor from anthropomorphized foodstuffs and flora, revisited across iterations that reflect sustained engagement with recurring motifs. Works such as Pink Studio (2024) recall canonical “artist and model” or “studio” scenes, evoking Matisse and Picasso.
Reeder first gained recognition through text-based works and parodic engagements with process painting. Rooted in still-life traditions, the Image Painting series attributes emotional and social relations to inanimate objects—bread and butter, fruits, vegetables, and everyday items. The Pasta Painting series reconfigures the gravitas of fine art through references to Jackson Pollock and Abstract Expressionism. More recent ceramic reliefs and Kuddelmuddel earthenware present replicated objects arranged like indices, reflecting on consumerism, desire, and excess. Projects such as the improvisational science fiction film Moon Dust (2014) and the ironic art fair Dark Fair (2008) further extend the range of his practice.

Ⅰ. Humor, Bread and Butter to Painting
“Whether it's funny or not, I'm definitely interested in a kind of extreme reduction, understatement, or deadpan, in making something really concise.” – Scott Reeder
Are these bananas voyeuristic or exhibitionistic? Can popsicles survive on a tropical beach? Bananas in therapy, smoking flowers, and drinking ice creams suggest narratives that are both absurd and strangely familiar. The Sisyphean image of melting ice cream—reading or painting while dissolving—carries a quiet resonance. These personified objects provoke humor while eliciting curiosity and unease, directing attention to events within the pictorial space. Viewers may perceive dynamics of gender, voyeurism, and power, while projecting their own emotions onto simplified forms. Reeder exposes the absurdity of assigning emotional and symbolic value to ordinary objects. His works operate as visual riddles through narrative fragments, miniature forms resembling mass-produced goods, scattered pasta alluding to abstraction, and ambiguous juxtapositions of text and image.
Humor in Reeder’s work is not merely a device for alleviating absurdity but a means of reconfiguring perception. It draws viewers in, shifting them from observers to participants. As Sigmund Freud suggests, humor resists despair through defiance. Reeder’s work similarly destabilizes artistic authority and convention. His film Moon Dust, set in a speculative lunar resort, presents a dystopian narrative critiquing social hierarchy and urban conditions. Dark Fair, staged in total darkness, operates as both critique and refusal of the art market’s structures. Often described as a “Midwestern Magritte,” Reeder challenges normative assumptions embedded in everyday life. His work resonates with René Magritte’s Période vache, whose deliberately crude and subversive paintings undermined aesthetic standards. Through such reversals, Reeder renders the familiar strange, using humor as a critical strategy within contemporary art.

Ⅱ. Language, Chance, and Painting
“Art is like turning corners; one never knows what is around the corner until one has made the turn.”
– Milton Avery
Reeder expands a recurring vocabulary—bread and butter, bananas, pears, ice cream—through iterative variation. His process revisits and transforms motifs across multiple versions. Images originate from prewritten word lists that function as reservoirs of ideas. His studio contains large canvases of words alongside List Paintings, Word Paintings, and preparatory sketches for neon works, where language operates as both visual and conceptual material. Chance plays a central role: Reeder may throw darts to select words, allowing unpredictability to guide image-making. Titles often precede images, underscoring the primacy of language. Meaning emerges through the interaction of word and image, as signifiers shift with context. This fluidity generates unexpected narratives and hybrid meanings, aligning his approach with Hans Arp, John Cage, and Dada.
Reeder’s work is deeply informed by art history, incorporating references that oscillate between homage and parody. Cartoon-like figures recall Philip Guston; interiors evoke Matisse; pools suggest Hockney; compositions echo Man Ray or Pollock. These references function as transformations rather than quotations, addressing tensions between abstraction and representation, and between high and low culture. Positioned alongside figures such as Martin Kippenberger, Sigmar Polke, and Milton Avery, Reeder persistently resists fixed definitions of painting. His work accumulates layered meanings, where color, humor, and seemingly light imagery articulate a distinct position within contemporary painting.
