Who?

미국 건축사이자 갤러리 매니저, 대학 겸임교수 및 다양한 디자인 작업을 하고 있습니다. 특히 다양한 스케일과 재료, 복잡한 구조적 언어, 디자인 방법론 등에 관심을 가지고 연구하고 있습니다. 작업은 주로 뉴욕, 필라델피아 그리고 서울에서 진행하며, 지난 10여 년간 네덜란드의 유엔스튜디오(UNStudio), 미국의 ARO와 IK Studio, 한국의 정림건축에서 사무를 배웠으며, 캐나다와 오스트리아에서도 건축과 디자인 일을 배웠습니다. 현재는 미국 뉴욕의 퍼킨스 이스트만 Perkins Eastman Architects에서 시니어 디자이너로 근무 중입니다.

유펜에서 건축 석사를 수석 졸업하며 디자인 부문 골드메달, 미국 건축사협회상 및 다수 분야에서 동시 수상하였습니다. 2010년 이후 조교로, 2016년부터는 겸임교수로 3년간 유펜에 출강했으며, 뉴욕 공과대(NYIT), Parsons, 서울대, 한양대 등 여러 대학에서 게스트 크리틱으로 활동했습니다. 2016년 베니스 건축비엔날레에 출품했으며, 2017년 2019년 두 차례 서울도시건축비엔날레에 지도 교수와 함께 가르친 유펜 학생들의 작품을 선보이기도 했습니다.

또한 갤러리JJ의 매니저로 개관이래 지금까지 8여년 간 웹사이트 운영, 이미지 아카이빙, 번역, 홍보 등에 노력을 하고 있습니다.

Brett is a licensed architect, artist, lecturer, and gallery manager active in New York, Philadelphia, and Seoul. His interest spans across multi-media and scales, speculating on complex structural tectonics, new material technologies, and fabrication methods in architectural practice and discourse. He has 8 years of design experience from small boutiques to large corporate offices including UNStudio, ARO, Coop Himmelbla(u), IK Studio, and Junglim Architecture. Currently, he is a senior designer at Perkins Eastman, New York office, where he works in various practice fields from Hospitality, Sports & Recreation to Commercial & Mixed Use.

Brett holds a Master of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania with AIA Henry Adams Medal 1st Prize (top-ranking graduate), Gold Medal Arthur Spayd Brooke Memorial (excellence in design), and John Stewardson Memorial Prize. He has been a graduate teaching and research assistant at PennDesign since 2010, and has completed his advanced independent research project, “Architecture of Animation and Aesthetics” and has exhibited his and his students' works at Venice Biennale 2016 and 2018, and Seoul Architecture Biennale 2017 and 2019.

Also as a founding member of GalleryJJ in Seoul, Korea, he is interested in museology, curatorial studies, and art business. He has extensively visited numerous museums, galleries, and art fairs over the past 20 years with on-going documentation of museum collections, exhibition catalogs, and image libraries for a mini-encyclopedia of his own.
