갤러리JJ는 2023년 한 해를 마감하는 전시 <PANORAMA>를 마련하였다. 본 전시는 JJ가 올해 선별한 작품들을 한자리에서 만나볼 수 있는 기회로, 그동안 함께해온 작가의 신작 및 2023년 새롭게 선보이는 JJ컬렉션들로 구성된다. 한국 회화사의 중요한 작가인 서용선의 신작을 비롯해 추상의 본질을 끈질기게 탐구해나가는 홍수연, 자유로운 상상력이 돋보이는 윤정원, 영국을 중심으로 세계 무대에서 활발히 활동하는 신미경의 비누 작업, 전원근과 사이먼 몰리, 닉 슐라이커의 각기 독특한 색면회화는 감상하는 재미가 남다르다. 자전적 이야기로 삶의 통찰과 행복을 전하는 미국 작가 아담 핸들러, 그리고 영국 출신인 조지 몰튼 클락의 작품은 팝과 추상을 넘나드는 독특한 작품 세계로 미술계의 주목을 받고 있다. 회화 및 조각 작품 27점으로 구성되는 이번 전시는 다양한 형식의 동시대 예술의 경험을 통해 또다른 세계와 만나고 사유하는 시간을 기대한다.

아담 핸들러(Adam Handler, b.1986)의 작업은 마치 어린아이의 그림을 연상시키는 화면 속 고스트와 소녀 형상을 통해 유한한 삶의 허무를 극복하고 희로애락을 표현한다 그는 현재 뉴욕을 중심으로 국제 무대에서 활동하고 있으며, 유망한 동시대 작가들 중 한 명으로 자리매김하고 있다. 즉흥적이고 때로 장난스럽기도 한 화면 속에는 철학적이자 재치 넘치는 표현이 가득하다. 자전적 삶이 녹아있는 히어로들의 세계, 환상의 우주 정원으로 표현하는 등 천진난만한 시선으로 따뜻한 공감과 내면적 소통을 이어가는 핸들러의 작업으로부터 색다른 시각적, 예술적 경험을 기대한다.
독일과 한국을 오가며 활동하는 전원근(Wonkun Jun, b.1970)의 예술세계는 삶을 ‘색’으로 반향하는 그림으로 압축할 수 있다. 우리에게 색면, 혹은 모노크롬적 추상회화로 친근한 그의 작업에서 발현되는 독특한 아우라는 반복적으로 색을 쌓고 ‘닦아내는’ 전원근 특유의 작업방식에서 비롯된다. 가장 기본적 조형 요소인 점, 선, 면을 구성요소로 하는 가운데 작업은 흔히 우리에게 차갑고 이성적인 작업으로 정형화된 미니멀리스트의 작품과는 차별적으로, 절제된 가운데 따뜻함까지 포용하면서 정서적으로 다가온다. 작가는 예술이 주는 위안과 치유의 힘을 믿으며 이를 미학적 경험으로 안겨준다.
사이먼 몰리(Simon Morley, b.1958)는 영국 출신으로 현재 한국에 거주하면서 파리를 오가며 작업하고 전시활동을 한다. 단색조의 화면을 보여주는 몰리의 작업은 문자와 이미지 간의 관계를 탐색하면서 관습적인 것들의 틈 혹은 ‘사이(in-between)’, 경계의 공간에서 사유한다. 화가이면서 여러 권의 전문서적을 펴낸 미술사가이기도 한 몰리에게 책과 문자는 뗄 수 없는 요소다. ‘Book Paintings’(북 페인팅) 시리즈는 책이라는 매체를 회화로 번안한 것으로, 문화를 혼합하고 영화의 특정 장면이나 사인보드를 회화로 옮기는 등 매체의 변환을 즐기는 작가의 성향을 대표하는 작업이다.
애니메이션과 추상성을 접목하는 영국 작가 조지 몰튼-클락(George Morton-Clark, b.1982)은 대중문화 속 고전 만화의 익숙한 캐릭터에 낙서 같은 추상적 요소를 더하는 동시에 움직임을 표현하는 즉흥적 드로잉의 독특한 작업을 선보인다. 이를테면 톰과 제리 등 애니메이션 캐릭터가 작가의 추상적인 재해석을 통하여 예술적으로 재탄생하는 것이다. 작가는 현재 이스트 런던에서 작업하고 있으며, 아트바젤 등 미술시장에서 혜성처럼 떠오르면서 전세계적으로 주목받으며 컬렉터가 늘어가고 있다.
닉 슐라이커(Nick Schleicher, b.1988)는 촉각적 물질성을 지닌 색면적 추상회화를 중심으로, 한편 회화와 사물이 교차하는 오브제 작업을 한다. 그의 작업은 미니멀리스트의 명료성과 진지함에서 비켜서서 위트를 더하여 보다 정서적이며 인간적인 것을 추구한다. 작가는 회화의 지지체로서의 캔버스와 표면, 안료의 물성과 적용방식을 오래 탐구해 왔다. 특히 형광안료나 광택이 나는 젤 등 물성이 강한 매체로 아주 얇은 레이어를 만들며, 화면이 평평해질 때까지 반복적으로 층을 쌓아 나간다. 정확한 의도와 자유롭고 즉흥적인 구성이 함께 작용하여 각 레이어가 투명하거나 불투명하게 불규칙적으로 겹치고, 여기에 매끈거리고 반짝이는 안료의 물성이 더해지면서 화면에는 모호한 환영적 공간감마저 생긴다.
런던과 서울을 오가며 영국박물관 등 유럽 유수의 미술관에서 전시하며 국제 무대에서 활동하는 신미경(Meekyoung Shin, b.1967)은 25년 가까운 오랜 시간 동안 조각의 재료가 아닌 ‘비누’라는 매체의 가변적인 물성과 풍화되는 유물의 형태를 대응시키면서 시간성을 가시화하여 시공간적 문화, 재료 간의 ‘번역’에서 오는 간극, 차이를 끄집어낸다. 모각에 따르는 재현과 원본성의 문제는 물론이고, 한갓 조각 재료의 대체제로 쓰인 일상 소모품인 비누의 물성은 견고한 권위의 조각적 형상과 충돌하면서 유물이 지닌 상징적 가치나 절대 가치, 문명에 의문을 제기한다. 응축된 시간을 중심으로 작업은 수많은 질문과 동시에 ‘조각’이란 것에 대해 다시 생각하게 한다.
서용선(Yongsun Suh, b.1951)의 예술세계는 인간들의 삶의 세계 그리기로 압축된다. 작업의 모든 시각적 형상은 기본적으로 사람에 대한 관심으로 이는 곧 인간의 삶을 조건 짓는 ‘사회’와 관계를 맺으면서 역사와 신화, 자화상, 도시 인물과 풍경 등으로 나타난다. 주로 강렬한 색채와 표현적인 터치가 있는 한편 압축적이고 간결한 구조와 질서를 보여주는 화면은 역사 속 개인의 삶, 사회 시스템 특히 서울, 뉴욕, 베를린, 멜버른 등 지구촌 대도시 상황에 처해진 현대인의 모습을 잘 보여준다. 이는 자신이 마주하는 삶의 세계에서 인간이란 무엇인가에 대한 실존적 물음이다.
홍수연(Sooyeon Hong, b.1967)은 캔버스 위에 독특한 무중력의 공간을 창조하여 비정형적 형상들이 부유하는 듯한 움직임이 있는 추상작업으로 잘 알려져 있다. 캔버스 자체를 기울여 중력에 의한 흘리기로 색을 입히는 새로운 회화의 방식으로 독특한 추상적 공간을 창조한다. 주로 단색조의 단순한 배경 속에 레이어들이 서로 겹쳐지면서 화면은 깊고 무한한 우주 같은 공간성을 획득하여 관객들의 각기 다른 상상력과 감성을 끌어낸다. 무엇보다 그러한 동적 움직임은 자신을 포함하여 끊임없이 변화하고 균형을 잡아나가는 우리 내면의 문제, 살아있음을 추상의 언어로 표현하는 것이라고 볼 수 있다.
윤정원(Jeongwon Yoon, b.1971)은 자유로운 구성력과 판타지가 돋보이는 회화는 물론, 현대 여성으로 변신한 바비인형과 화려한 샹들리에 작업으로 잘 알려져 있다. 이러한 작업에는 제도화된 세상에 저항하며 자유에 대한 갈망을 품은 작가의 세계관이 담겨있다. 작가는 오브제나 설치, 회화와 사진 등의 매체를 거뜬히 넘나들며, 거대한 크기의 작업에서부터 소소한 일상적인 것까지 넓은 스펙트럼을 가지고 작업의 역량을 보여준다. 일상적 재료에 상상력을 불어넣은 그의 작품에서 삶과 예술, 꿈과 현실의 경계는 의미를 잃는다.

Featuring JJ collections from 2023 and selected recent works by artists long associated with the gallery, the exhibition offers an unparalleled viewing experience. Explore the latest works by Yongsun Suh, a pivotal contemporary Korean painter; a determined survey of abstraction by Sooyeon Hong; vivid imagery by Jeongwon Yoon; globally acclaimed sculptural work using soap by Meekyoung Shin, and a uniquely captivating color planes by Wonkun Jun, Simon Morley, and Nick Schleicher. Additionally, delve into autobiographical stories conveying insights into life and happiness by Adam Handler, and George Morton-Clark's unique language transcending pop and abstraction that have garnered attention in the current art scene. The collection of twenty-seven paintings and sculptures extends an opportunity to encounter and contemplate various artistic experiences in contemporary art.
Adam Handler (b.1986) whimsically captures the essence of transcending the existential void in finite life through ghost and girl figures, evoking varied emotions. Based in New York, he actively participates in the global art scene, solidifying his position as a prolific contemporary artist. Within the spontaneous and playful imagery lies a more profound scrutiny and witty expression that offer a captivating complexity beyond its innocent appearance. Through a juvenile lens infused with autobiographical stories, depicting a world of heroes and an imaginative cosmic garden, anticipate a distinct visual and artistic experience fostering empathy and inner resonance.
Wonkun Jun (b.1970), based in Germany and Korea, distills life into paintings that resonate with color. His work, known as color planes or monochrome abstract paintings, offers a unique aura through his distinct technique of repeatedly layering and wiping out diluted pigments. While his composition utilizes basic forms such as points, lines, and planes, the color-images often evoke an emotional response in the viewer, embracing warmth amid moderation and differentiating them from cold and formulaic minimalists. He believes in art's consoling and healing power, imparting it as an aesthetic experience.
Simon Morley (b.1958), originally from the UK, currently lives in Korea and often works and exhibits in Paris. His monochromatic works explore the spaces between conventions or 'in-between,' delving into the interplay between text and image. As both a painter and an art historian who has authored several scholarly publications, for him, books and text are inseparable elements from art. The Book Painting series involves translating books into paintings, one medium to another, reflecting his interest in cultural amalgamation and medium transformation, such as translating specific scenes from films or signboards into paintings.
British artist George Morton-Clark (b.1982) seamlessly merges animation and abstraction, adding doodle-like elements to those characters from classic cartoons in popular culture. He imbues vitality and spontaneity into nostalgic figures such as Tom and Jerry through dynamic and concise linework. They are reborn with a newly defined meaning by his reinterpretation. Using oil, acrylic, pastel, and charcoal, he decides on each move spontaneously and leaves a trace of his decision on canvas which evokes our curiosity. He currently works in East London and has recently gained immense attention from collectors worldwide.
Nick Schleicher (b.1988) navigates the realm between painting and object in his abstract, color-field paintings characterized by luminous colors and tactile materiality. His work breaks away from the exactness and formality of minimalism in pursuit of something more human and whimsical. His process involves an extensive study of the canvas, its surface, and the materiality and application of pigments. Thin layers are applied repeatedly with fluorescent pigments and glossy gels until they achieve flatness and a strong material presence. The interplay of transparent and opaque layers, enhanced by smooth and shimmering pigments, creates captivating ambiguity and spatiality.
Working and living between London and Seoul, Meekyoung Shin (b.1967) has exhibited in renowned European museums including the British Museum. For over two decades, she has visualized temporality using soap as a medium, distinct from traditional sculptural materials, juxtaposing its variable nature with the weathered form of relics. This process makes temporality visible, addressing gaps and differences arising from the translation among cultures and materials in both spatial and temporal contexts. Issues of reproduction and authenticity are contested through the physicality of soap, challenging the authority of sculpture, and questioning the absolute value of relics and civilization. Such condensed time in her work prompts a revisit to the concept of sculpture itself.
Yongsun Suh (b.1951) encapsulates diverse facets of human existence in his paintings. Every visual aspect of his work fundamentally explores humanity, intricately woven with social relationships governing human life. History, mythology, self-portraits, cityscapes, and landscapes serve as manifestations of his inquiry. Suh employs robust color and expressive brushstroke, presenting scenes that, while concise, reveal individual lives in the context of contemporary cities such as Seoul, New York, Berlin, and Melbourne. This artistic approach reflects his sincere contemplation of what it means to be human in the world one encounters.
Sooyeon Hong (b.1967) is known for her abstract works that create a weightless space on canvas, featuring irregular forms with dynamic movement. She employs a unique painting technique, tilting the canvas and applying color through gravity-induced dripping. Layers overlap in monochromatic backgrounds, giving the composition a deep, infinite spatial quality reminiscent of the cosmos and inducing diverse imaginations. Such dynamic movement portrays the abstraction of vitality, addressing constant transformation and balance within the viewer.
Jeongwon Yoon (b.1971) is acclaimed for paintings with unrestrained composition and fantasy, including her Barbie series portraying modern women and the dazzling chandelier series. These works embody her vision, expressing a longing for autonomy and resistance against institutionalized norms. Yoon effortlessly moves through diverse media, showcasing artistic versatility from large-scale works to everyday objects. These objects infused with her vivid imagination blur the boundary between life and art, and between dream and reality.
